Nature photos can be some of the most satisfying to take, since they are of some of the most beautiful things in the world: flowers, forests, mountains, birds. All of them are marvels of color, shape and texture. If you're a nature or stock photographer but your photos don't always come out as beautiful as you'd like, let us help. Taking Nature Photo Tips

Zoom zoom zoom. But only use your camera's optical zoom. Some cameras have a digital zoom as well, but these pixelate the images and degrade the resolution. Master your camera's settings before shooting close-ups. Many cameras have “macro” settings or the like, designed to be ready to shoot extremely close subjects such as flowers and plants and other intricate and detailed objects.

Make the most of the weather. Sometimes life hands you sunny days, and sometimes it hands you thunderstorms. Whatever the weather, maximize its effect on your nature photography. Dark, ominous clouds rolling in over the horizon can be just as beautiful and powerful as a perfect sunset. Watch for the way the light changes in different seasons, and in different kinds of weather. Sunny days may make colors more vibrant, but a vibrant flower on a cloudy day may stand out all the more for everything else being muted. Bright, cloudless skies might create deep, dramatic shadows, or create a dappled forest floor. Pay attention, and abandon your notions about what constitutes the “ideal.”

Exaggerate the contrast between light and dark in a shadowy forest scene. A cactus against a fluffy-cloud-filled sky is striking when changed to stark black and white.
